What is recognition?

Recognition including recognition of prior learning (RPL), is a process for giving candidates credit for skills, knowledge and experience gained through working and learning. It can be gained at any stage of their lives, through formal and informal learning, in Australia or overseas, through work or other activities such as volunteering.

Recognition means the candidate gains credit towards a vocational qualification - sometimes a full qualification - without undertaking a complete training program. Recognition is faster, cheaper and more efficient than putting people through training in areas they already know well. It means less time off the job and is more satisfying for the learner.

What are the rules to follow when submitting or assessing evidence from Candidtates well they are as required within the Vet Sector Standards for RTOs But simply 4 Rules.

The assessor is assured that the learner has the skills, knowledge and attributes as described in the module or unit of competency and associated assessment requirements.

The assessor is assured that the quality, quantity and relevance of the assessment evidence enables a judgement to be made of a learner’s competency.

The assessor is assured that the evidence presented for assessment is the learner’s own work.

The assessor is assured that the assessment evidence demonstrates current competency. This requires the assessment evidence to be from the present or the very recent past.

As you can see it appears simple but the skill is Mapping the Evidence against Training package Qualifiactions and or units Perfomance and skills requirements I will cover this in another topic session for you so keep following this site and we will all be kept Current.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of your Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal recognition process of a person's skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred.

Even if you have never formally studied or trained in a particular area, you may have gained knowledge and skills through your education, training, work and life experience.

By applying for RPL, you may gain a full or part qualification. This is much faster than completing a qualification in the normal way as it avoids the frustration of studying things in which you are already competent and experienced.

RPL is a recognition process evidenced in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) and could provide you with a full or part qualification and avoid duplication of training.

It could also be used to identify what training you may need to complete a qualification, or provide a pathway to higher qualifications.

You may already have a lifetime of experience but no formal recognition or documentation of certificates to show for it.


RPL applications are where we provide a review of your supplied documents/ evidence and source a qualification suitable to the evidence you have obtained and provided.

This service includes:

  • Checking your Evidence against the Performance criteria
  • Noting in writing where we think your application can be improved, including some specific suggestions
  • Any other elements that we think could improve your application
  • Full mapping of your skills and evidence towards obtaining the qualification for you
  • Completing your RPL Application in full (if required)
  • Provide you with a fully tax deductable invoice
  • Skills gap analysis

To make use of this service we would need copies of the following (as a guide):

  • Current Resume
  • Certified true Copies of all Certificates, Degrees, Diplomas, Statements of Attainment etc
  • Any job descriptions you may have
  • Printout of service history in any previous job
  • Letters of service, thank you letters/remarks, good work, commendations etc
  • All licences held, copies only
  • Documents and reports you have written (that relate to the qualifications)
  • Observations of you doing something, eg demonstrating a briefing of Security Personnel, Running Sheets, Incident forms, Supervisor Checklist's etc
  • Projects/Task Forces you have contributed to, and third-party reports about these (eg from your supervisors)
  • Questions, asked orally or in writing (any papers delivered)
  • Outcomes from learning programs (including self-learning and online learning)
  • Assessment feedback (from a trainer or assessor)
  • Observation checklists (from a workplace supervisor or assessor)
  • Written statements or references (including workplace supervisors, community leaders)
  • Work journal
  • Product descriptions or specifications (supporting the product samples included)
  • Statutory declarations if original documents cannot be located.

If in doubt as to what qualification you might be eligible for, still send the documents to us and we will do the work mapping your skills and assessing against Currency, Valid and Sufficient as per Training packaging rules.

Please indicate the qualifications you wish to be considered and assessed towards. We will then provide a quote for the qualifications if you have sufficient evidence.

With reasonable notice, we are able to achieve a one-week turnaround for our RPL services. Subject to other ongoing work and receipt of all required documents/evidence.
